Golden Hearts Animal Sanctuary

A Sanctuary For Elderly & Special Needs Animals

Luna is a 12 year old girl who came from a Riverside county shelter.  We knew as she left the shelter that she had a special personality.  Crossing the shelter’s front lawn, she stopped and rolled and wiggled and wagged her tail, running in circles with delight!

What a sight she was!  Suffering from chronic skin problems, this little one had practically no hair from her hind legs back, and what was on her tail was matted. We treated her flea infestation, and worked with her eyes and ears.  What we thought was an upper respiratory infection turned out to be chronic conjunctivitis (from low tear production) and severe ear infections, which actually had her ear canals swollen shut!  She has been treated for both, and we continue to deal daily with her allergies.  She receives not only western medicine ear medications and antibiotics when necessary, she’s also being treated homeopathically.  The end result—we are pleased to report she’s only slightly itchy this summer, and she has a beautiful hair coat!

Luna also has a heart murmur, and is partially blind, but it sure doesn’t slow her down!  She actually starts each morning by waking everyone up as she’s chasing her tail!  She is the “Squeaky Toy Queen” and is not pleased with anything less than 2 squeaky dumbbells in her possession (3 in the picture above!)  She enjoys car rides, so is often seen shopping for biscuits and fuzzy toys!  Luna seems grateful for each new day that comes her way and is always sure to show it!

Update 9/07 ~ Luna was diagnosed with renal failure, which for dogs is a very rapid disease process. She was able to be managed, thankfully, at home with fluid therapy and nutritional support, plus chiropractic and acupuncture. She rallied for 6 weeks, and crossed the Bridge when it was evident she could no longer enjoy her favorite daily pleasures. We will miss this wonderful soul and are grateful for the opportunity to have loved her....
