Golden Hearts Animal Sanctuary

A Sanctuary For Elderly & Special Needs Animals

Who is that handsome lab mix cruising by?  Why it's Sherman in his new wagon!  A 3 year resident with us, Sherman (aka Sherman Tank) was introduced to a new way to travel early this year.  We found a red wagon for him, with removable sides so he can get in and out easily, yet stay secure.

Over 1 1/2 years ago, Sherman was diagnosed with a nerve sheath tumor, a form of cancer.  It's not an uncommon tumor, but many of them occur in limbs, where surgery can be an effective cure.  Sherman's tumor is different because it's located off his spinal cord, and surgery would not be an option given where it's growing.  We are fortunate in that this has not been a painful disease for him, but over time he has lost the use of his left hind leg, and developed urinary incontinence.  That doesn't slow him down however, he gets around pretty well, but can't walk long distances.

The wagon affords him the opportunity to go to Petsmart, go on walks, and even go to the beach (as in the photo above).  In his travels, he's a wonderful ambassador for disabled animals!  So if you see a flash of red go by, it's probably Sherman on his way to Petsmart for biscuits!

Update 4/22/05:

Sherman crossed the Rainbow Bridge on April 21. He

deteriorated rapidly, as a second cancer also invaded his

body. His bright smile and wagging tail will be deeply missed...
