Golden Hearts Animal Sanctuary

A Sanctuary For Elderly & Special Needs Animals

MeiLi

MeiLi came from New Beginnings for Animals in Orange County. They rescued her from one of their shelters, but it quickly became clear all was not well with her. Their veterinarians diagnosed her with probable lung cancer. When asked if she could come here for hospice care, we gladly said yes!

We had some further work-ups done by our veterinarians, and the conclusion is that she is suffering from  chronic lung and sinus disease as a result of feline herpes virus. She hates to be medicated, so treatment options are limited for her. She takes a daily antihistamine and immune-boosting supplements to keep her symptoms to a minimum. She has an Albuterol inhaler to use when she’s having an exceptionally bad day.

She also has limited contact with the other kitties who have immune challenges.  She spends most of the day in our guest room napping, and the afternoons and evenings she spends outside in Shiloh’s yard. She has now accepted living with dogs as long as there is a lap nearby! We don’t know how much time she does have with us, but we’re doing our best to make it the best quality time we can!

Update 1/1/07 ~ MeiLi continues to thrive. She’s gained weight, and her sassy attitude keeps every one in line! She has her own electric blanket for cold nights and mornings, a space heater in her room too, plus her own HEPA filter. She’s only missing a TV in her room (the sanctuary’s phone is in there, so she has one of those too!). Chinese herbs on Santa Ana wind days help her breathe better, plus antihistamines. We expect her to continue enjoying her golden years!
