Golden Hearts Animal Sanctuary

A Sanctuary For Elderly & Special Needs Animals

Waldo

It's not often that an animal can get transported cross-country, let alone fly cross-country, yet this is our second kitty who received such a second chance at a new life. This handsome guy, named Waldo (known as Swope by his shelter friends) came from the Grayson County Humane Society in Kentucky.  He also earned frequent flyer miles as he flew via American Airlines as a carry-on with folks flying from Nashville to LAX!

Waldo has severe oral problems, which may require pulling the rest of his teeth. His exam and labwork with our primary care and internist were all normal, so we began a steroid and antibiotic regime, with pain medication too. His initial treatment plan of long-term antibiotics and steroids just wasn’t working well for him. The decision came to pull his teeth and give him a new chance for life pain-free.  Yes, that meant pulling all of his teeth ~ a dramatic move, but it offered the best chance for him to get better. And it worked!! He now must “gum” his food, but he lives with the kitties in Ballou’s House on a canned only diet, so it’s not a problem. It took several weeks for everything to heal in and he had plenty of pain medication to make sure he was comfortable. He’s now enjoying life pain-free!

Update 9/07 ~ Waldo’s doing well, but now has another problem that often happens in southern California - feline asthma! He now has his own bottle of Prednisolone on hand in case he has another asthma attack. We will also consider an Albuterol inhaler for him as well!
