A Sanctuary For Elderly & Special Needs Animals |
|
The saying “Golden Retrievers leave pawprints on our hearts” is true. When in spring 2000, a 12+ year-old female Golden Retriever entered our home, little did I know she would be the catalyst for change in my life’s path. A shelter rescue, she had a long list of medical problems, including mammary cancer. She named herself “Hope” and quickly became a prominent personality in our household. She spent 2 1/2 wonderful years with us before losing a battle with lung cancer. She taught everyone she met about courage, unconditional love, and most of all “Hope”. I realized as I cared for her and my first rescue dog Lucky as they aged, that elderly animals have few places to go when they enter a shelter or rescue situation. As senior and special needs rescues trickled into our home, the need became clear. I began to dream of a sanctuary, where animals could live out their “golden years”. The dream became reality in 2004, with the founding of the Golden Hearts Animal Sanctuary. It received its 501(c)(3) status in December 2004. Located in Valley Center, California, on 2 1/2 acres, we are a small sanctuary, able to provide one-on-one care in a home environment. Why Golden Hearts Animal Sanctuary? The answer is in our residents… their eyes are cloudy, their muzzles grey, but their hearts are Gold!
